FERHRI specialists are currently involved in the following international projects (among others):

  • Circulation Research of the East Asian Marginal Seas (CREAMS) – with Kyushu University, Japan, and Seoul National University, Korea;
  • Large-scale Hydrography and Historical Data Analysis of the Japan (East) Sea (with Scripps Institution of Oceanography and University of Washington, USA);
  • Joint Studies of the Okhotsk Sea (with Hokkaido University, Japan, and University of Washington, USA).
Geographically, the main areas of investigations are: the Subarctic Pacific Ocean, the Japan Sea, the South China Sea (including Vietnam shelf), the Sea of Okhotsk (including Sakhalin Island Shelf), the Bering Sea, and the Indian Ocean.

The main research directions are the following: oceanographic data collection and processing; water circulation; oceanography of coastal areas; tides, tsunamies and storm surges; sea ice; development of forecasting methods and numerical models.

Leading specialists and their research interests (in alphabetical order): Dr. M.A.Danchenkov (the Japan Sea oceanography), Dr. E.I.Lastovetsky (tides, shelf areas), Dr. V.A.Luchin (Far Eastern Seas), Dr. A.N.Manko (ocean climate), Dr. A.D.Nelezin (Pacific Ocean and Kuroshio), Dr. A.G.Petrov (sea ice), Dr. A.V.Saveliev (sea level), Dr. A.V.Tkalin (marine pollution studies).

In 1994, Regional Oceanographic Data Center (RODC) was established in FERHRI. RODC is the branch of the World Data Center B (Obninsk) and is headed by Dr. N.A.Rykov.
