In the field of METEOROLOGY FERHRI specialists carry out scientific research in the following main directions:

  • investigations of causes and mechanisms of climate changes and green-house effect;
  • investigations and modelling of different-scale atmospheric processes, including typhoons;
  • investigations of climate variability in Eastern Siberia and Russian Far East, over the Pacific Ocean and adjacent seas;
  • development of new weather forecasting methods for periods from several hours to several days and long-term weather forecasting;
  • compilation and publication of atlases, catalogues, and collections of papers.
Institute has a large data base of meteorological observations for Siberia, Russian Far East, the Pacific Ocean and adjacent seas as well as tight cooperation with World data Center B (Obninsk). Some joint projects with meteorologists from China, Korea and Japan are carried out.

Special attention is paid to tropical zone of the Pacific and Indian Oceans for better understanding of ocean-atmosphere interaction and tropical storm formation. Comprehensive "Typhoon" expeditions were organized and carried out in tropical NW Pacific in 1975-1989. Now the operative forecast of typhoon formation, development and movement is carried out. The technique for forecasting of tropical cyclone evolution has been developed using modern statistic approach.

Leading specialists and their scientific interests: Dr.V.P.Tunegolovets (typhoons), Dr.S.M.Varlamov (modelling), Dr. G.I.Anzhina (climatestudies), Dr.N.A.Dashko (marine meteorology), Dr.Yu.V.Kazantsev (green-house effect, modelling), Dr.T.M.Zhuravleva (long-term forecasts), Mr.E.P.Uraevsky (computer systems and technologies).
