In recent years, FERHRI specialists carried out marine pollution studies in the following areas (from north to south):
- The Bering Sea;
- The Sea of Okhotsk (including Sakhalin Island Shelf);
- The Sea of Japan (including coastal areas of Russia and DPRK);
- The Yellow Sea (including coastal areas of DPRK and China);

Investigations of marine environment pollution include (but are not limited to) analysis of priority pollutants (trace metals, petroleum and
chlorinated hydrocarbons, radionuclides) in sea water, bottom sediments and mussels as
well as characteristics of benthos, phyto- and zooplankton.
Leading specialists and their research interests (in alphabetical order): T.A.Belan (macrobenthos, phytoplankton), T.S.Lishavskaya (pollutants
in sea water), E.V.Oleynik (macrobenthos, zooplankton), Dr. A.V.Tkalin (pollutants in
bottom sediments and mussels).
Recently, marine pollution studies are implemented jointly with
specialists from Japan, USA and Republic of Korea.
